Eagle Project

For my Eagle Project, I combined my passion for 3D printing with my passion for helping those with special needs. I led a team of middle school students in the design of 3D printable sensory fidgets and the creation of a sensory room at my local middle school. I posted the designs and instructions for these fidgets online for any school to download and print, encouraging more students to become involved with 3D printing.

Motivation

I designed this project to complete two tasks. The first was to bring sensory tools at low cost to schools. The second was to expand the number of students who were interacting with 3D printing regularly. These goals worked perfectly together to bring 3D printed sensory fidgets into schools.

Leadership

A vital aspect of Eagle Projects is practicing leadership skills by leading a team of peers. In my case, I taught and led a team of middle school students in the ideation and 3D design of easily printable sensory fidgets. This was the first step of bringing 3D printing to more students.

Sensory Room @ Local Middle School

In addition to the online resource from the sensory fidgets, I wanted to provide a full sensory experience for my local middle school. This included building large crash pillows, visual, auditory, and weight stimulation.

Posting the files online

To produce an impact that extended well beyond what my small team could achieve, I posted the designs online for any individuals or schools to download and print their own sensory fidgets. This encourages people by providing an easy way to access 3D printing, rather than having to design objects from scratch. The files are availible on Thingiverse.

Creation of Nonprofit

Due to great response from donations and from educators, I began an NC nonprofit to continue the positive impact of the project. We donate sensory fidgets to other nonprofits and organizations who help children with special needs, including Surfers Healing.
